I think we all had a great time at the family reunion. Sorry Scott, Darrin, Clarrisa, Colby, Matt, Cahterine, Alison, Sarah, and Kimball could not be there. I think the kids enjoyed each other and getting grandma wet.

There was one aspect planned for the reunion that did not get done (to Penny's frustration). We were hoping for a chance to have an adult meeting, but this was clearly not the venue.
The recent leadership training was held in February and distributed as a supplement to the recent Ensign. It was about the family and has a long section with a round table discussion. I would encourage all to read. In thinking about the family, Penny and I agree that we need to spend some time deciding where we are as an extended family and where we are going. Therefore, I propose the following:
The formation of a family council consisting of all adults. The grandchildren would become a part of the council when they turned 12.
Meeting once a year. ( I would propose the first to be held the Friday after Thanksgiving with some sort of video conferencing for those unable to attend)
The agenda would include:
Formation of a family mission statement
Devolopment of a Family motto
Discussion of the family culture and how we can use it to improve all.
Family goals for the future year
Review of the previous year
Discussion of inidividual grandchildren and how the extended family can be a part of their development.
Formaliztion of communication
Sharing of individual family goals and concerns (as appropriate)
I think this should be held in a conference setting away from homes and younger children
Followed by dinner etc.
This family has been through some very difficult and stressful times, but has come through showing a resiliency that is rare today. We should be able to build on this to provide a base that will serve the grandchildren well. It is a tough world to grow up in and an effective extended family can be a great bullwork to protect and guide the next generation.
Let me know what you think.
